Laura Camila Peñuela Cárdenas

Executive Summary

Laura Camila Peñuela Cárdenas has recently completed her undergraduate degree in Bioengineering at McGill University, with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. She graduated in the top 10 percentile of the Faculty of Engineering. Growing up in Colombia, she witnessed, firsthand, health care inequalities caused by a system in which available resources depend upon socio-economic status. This experience not only made her aware of profound social inequities but also inspired her to alleviate the pain and suffering of others and to advocate for equitable and universal access to healthcare.

After immigrating to Canada in 2012, she took action to transform this desire into reality. As Co-President of the MSBDA Association, a McGill student-led organisation dedicated to raising awareness about blood product donations, her involvement led, amongst other things, to an increase in blood donation accessibility across the McGill community.

Most recently, Laura's innovative and creative spirit, along with her knowledge in biosensor development, has enabled her to intertwine science and medicine through research projects that directly address clinical and community health needs. In collaboration with some of her colleagues, she developed a colourimetric biosensor for the monitoring of chronic kidney disease (CKD) using a lensless CMOS image sensor. This contribution represents one of the first devices to enable quantitative sweat-based detection of CKD biomarkers through colourimetric imaging.

In the Fall of 2025, Laura will continue demonstrating her commitment to being of service to the community as she starts her medical studies at the University of Ottawa. Integrating her bioengineering background with her medical studies, she aspires to develop cutting-edge solutions that enhance healthcare accessibility and improve patient outcomes. From a broader perspective, as voluntary member of the Advisory Board of ICAHRIS, she will contribute to programmes and initiatives aimed at global preventative health, biodiversity protection and the elimination of ubiquitous pollutants negatively impacting human health and wildlife.
